Southern Steam - Margate Station in 1923

Southern Steam - Margate Station in 1923 Video Clips. Duration : 1.10 Mins.

Short newsreel clip showing a train arriving at Margate Station, then some exterior shots, dating from 1923. A rare glimpse of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway in operation. The number of locomotive shown is frustratingly obscured, but it is either a D1 or an E1 4-4-0, both classes being Maunsell's 1920's rebuilds of Wainwright's Edwardian D and E types. The classes in their rebuilt form were almost indistinguishable, the most notable variation being that the coupling rods on the D1s were fluted whereas the E1s coupling rods were plain, but this feature cannot be seen in the clip. The most likely candidate after repeated stop motion viewings is E1 No.497. Many of these locos saw another 40 years or so of service on former SECR lines, lasting until the end of steam in Kent in 1962/3. Sadly, not one example of the Maunsell type 4-4-0s (which also included the L and L1 classes) is preserved, although Wainwright D No.737 of 1901 was saved for the nation and can be seen at the National Railway Museum in York.
